Niten

Niten is the sword art of Miyamoto Musashi, Japans most famous samurai, there are three sword sets within Niten, totaling twenty four kata. In addition there are bo, Jutti and Ju-Jutsu techniques taught.

So who is Miyamoto Musashi ?

Shinmen Musashi Fujiwara Geshin (Miyamoto Musashi) the founder of Niten Ichi Ryu Kenjutsu was born in Japan in 1584 (Momoyama Period) and died at the age of 62 in 1645 (Edo Period). During his life Musashi is recorded as having fought in over 60 duals and of having taken part in 3 major battles - Sekigahara in 1600, the winter and summer battles of Osaka in 1614-1615 and the Shimbara rebellion of 1638. The sword strategies used and created by Musashi were based upon and proven in actual combat and the fact that Musashi survived to such a good age is perhaps proof of the effectiveness of his methods.

Musashi's written treatise on his strategy of swordsmanship are contained within the texts;

  1. Hyoho Sanju-go Kajo- 35 articles on the art of Swordmanship.
  2. Go Rin No Sho - Book of Five Rings.
  3. Dokkodo - Way of Self Reliance.

Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu Lineage

The Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu traces is Lineage back to Miyamoto Musashi through eleven generations;

Seiho of Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu

The school is most noted for its set of five Nito Seiho but there are also twelve Itto Seiho and seven Kodachi Seiho. In addition there are 20 Bo Seiho, plus forms using Jutte and Ju-Justu.
